The poem “Waiting” by Shri Rabindranath Tagore can be interpreted in multiple ways — spiritual, religious or even romantic. Moreover this poem on spirituality is an expression of a spiritual journey. Tagore talks about the Hindu belief that God resides within all of us, and the journey towards him requires no intermediary. In the poem, Tagore says that although he is moving forward in his journey towards God, he is not ready to “meet” him yet because his spiritual devotion is still developing. The poet expresses his confusion in this final stanza. God is with the least fortunate people, thus he cannot find a method to get in touch with them. He feels afraid because he believes he cannot live a fulfilling life without Him. The main concern of the poem is devotion to God.
Rabindranath Tagore was considered the greatest writer in modern Indian literature. He was a Bengali poet, novelist, educator, Nobel Laureate for Literature. Further Tagore won a knighthood, but he surrendered it in 1919 in protest against the Massacre at Amritsar, where British troops killed around 400 Indian demonstrators. The poet is constantly searching and is unable to relax. God must constantly be present in his life for him to have significance. It binds an essential experience of life in different context — waiting.

The song I came to sing
remains unsung to this day.
I have spent my days in stringing
and in unstringing my instrument.
The time has not come true,
the words have not been rightly set;
only there is the agony
of wishing in my heart…..
I have not seen his face,
nor have I listened to his voice;
only I have heard his gentle footsteps
from the road before my house…..
But the lamp has not been lit
and I cannot ask him into my house;
I live in the hope of meeting with him;
but this meeting is not yet.
