Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali polymath. He worked as a poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer and painter. Rabindranath Tagore poetries of Gitanjali are “profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful”. Moreover he became the first non-European and the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
“Where The Mind Is Without Fear” based on a patriotic theme by Tagore is a pre-independent poem. The poet sincerely urges to God to awake his fellow beings for the realization to live in a free and united country. This poem is a contemplation of a state of being, a place in time, and a way of living into which the author, Tagore, wishes his country, India, would awaken. The first nine lines of the poem present a number of statements. Each with positive attributes that Tagore is hoping India will achieve. He wishes that education should be accessible to all.
In addition, the people of the country should be living united and free from superstitions, not to be bogged down by the social barriers like casteism, regionalism or religion etc. Finally, the poem resolves by finishing all of these sentences, and Tagore makes a plea to his Father, to let his country get awakened in all conditions. Further he requests for his country to wake up into “that heaven of freedom.”

Poetry Continue
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
